Midgard Legends Edits
Jun. 7th, 2021 11:09 pmYou might have seen a few of my fics that have an "Edited and reuploaded" line in their summary. Midgard Legends is one of them.
This is something I tend to do to all of my big fics, and even quite a few of my small ones. Once a fic has been completed, and it seems like it's reached the end of its life cycle, I go back through and review all the comments and make a bunch of notes about what was said. I especially take notes of criticisms and questions where things were unclear, or didn't work right. I then go back through and rewrite the fic, paying attention to these notes, as well as fixing a bunch of stuff that bothered me.
For most fics, this winds up being just small changes here and there, fixing up grammar and moving a few paragraphs around. The changes are so small, I often don't even bother noting that the fic was edited at all.
But this one. Uff, there was so much I did not like about this fic by the end. This fic suffered from being written right when the MCU really started to take off, and it left me in this place of not knowing what my own endgame (lol) for the series was. As a result, there were a lot of weird inconsistencies with it that I just didn't like. I still don't entirely know where my endgame is heading, but I have a clearer direction for where I'm going. So I wanted to go back and fix a lot of stuff to reflect that.
Another thing that wound up being a problem is that it's part of a series, and almost nobody read the tie-in fic to this. 2CV went completely ignored by comparison. It has just over 1600 hits, compared to the 16,000 hits Midgard Legends got. 2CV was a scene I wanted badly to include in this fic, but there just wasn't room for it. I didn't think it was super important, but apparently a few of people got hung up on something that happened at the very end of Midgard Legends, because they didn't see that little side scene. It wasn't a huge number, but it was enough to make me want to fix that as well.
That's a problem this entire series has had. Series are weird, because they're a nice way to signal to readers that all of this stuff goes together, but few people will read everything in the series. There are people reading Second Rite who didn't read what came before, and it causes confusion.
But if you're reading this, there's good odds you got a weird notification in your email. That's because there's a new chapter, where a lot got shuffled around because a 1000-word fic got overlooked by 90% of the readers for this one. As a result, 2CV has been removed from the series, and moved to outtakes, because it no longer fits. Which is a shame, because I thought it was a cute little side adventure, but people don't read series on the whole. Alas.
