Had some ginger tea this morning, it seems to have helped my cold or flu or whatever this is. I'm still taking the medicine and I feel a little better but I did have to go out to get milk and vegetables and I stopped off at my favorite cafe to get a piece of German chocolate cake which I will eat later. The cafe was unusually crowded so I think I would have gotten takeout even if I didn't feel sick.

Busy morning but all done now

First there was volleyball. It was more fun than usual, actually. And then there was elbow coffee which was more boring than usual, actually. And that is some kind of boring, let me tell you. It may be all groups of very old people or just this one, but bring up an ailment and each and every one of them will bore you to tears and forever sharing their own experiences, the experiences of their family members and and friends of second cousins of the neighbors they used to have 25 years ago.

Hospitals are in the business of ensuring you get the worst care possible. Doctors are the stupidest people on the planet and don't even get them started on pharmacists.

It makes for tedious conversation. At one point I caught Bonny rolling her eyes into the back of her head and I nearly lost it in giggles.

But, now it's done for the week. Whew. And I have no more duties today.

I need a few things at the dollar store but I don't think today's the day. I think today is TV and knitting. My dinner order has been entered to be picked up later and I have sandwich makings for lunch.

Everything is under control... for now.

It's the weekend! What weekend writing plans do you have? Any snippets to share?

It's distinctly chilly, and I'm thinking about getting up and putting on some fingerless gloves, and maybe a rug round my shoulders until the heating comes on. *checks thermometer*; yes, it's down below fifty degrees again. That's always the point at which it starts to feel Unreasonably Cold For Inside. Down to 50F I can cope with thermal underwear and a silk scarf...

I finally wore myself out on Oasis and Lord Huron for a minute or two, so here are some things I've been listening to instead.

In the Earth Again by Chat Pile (noise rock/sludge metal) and Hayden Pedigo (acoustic guitarist). A bluesky friend turned me onto this, which is a really pleasing mix between menacing electric guitar and beautiful, contemplative acoustic, among other sounds. The concentration of each varies a lot depending on the track. I still don't love metal singing, and honestly there's only maybe two tracks here that I would choose to listen to on their on, but the interplay of all the elements never gets boring.

Lux by Rosalia. I don't feel musically educated enough to really appreciate this, lol, but it's gorgeous! I do lose steam towards the end once things get slow, but I really enjoy the first half or maybe 3/4.

"House" and "Chains of Love" by Charli XCX. My most recent obsession. Apparently she's making an entire concept album to accompany the new Wuthering Heights adaptation directed by Emerald Fennell? Okay!! I'm only mad I have to wait until February for the album, because I love these. "House" is pretty far outside my usual listening, and she's barely even on it, but that big moment the tuba comes in and then she follows? Incredible. And "Chains of Love" is more conventional and might not have grabbed me on its own, but paired with "House," idk, it really works for me.

Is this what finally gets me to click with Charli XCX? Signs point to yes.

Here is the lowdown, this year for Thanksgiving I traveled from Alaska to Texas. That part went well.

The part that annoys me is my mom just told me one of my aunts and uncles plan to attend Thanksgiving and they plan to watch football in the living room. My mom's house has an open floor plan so the dinning area, the kitchen, and living room are all in the same space. They are planning on at least 12 people attending this party.

The biggest problem beyond my own irritation at that level of rudeness is that I can't hear well when there are too many competing noises and I've noticed over the years I don't do well with crowds or too much noise.

I'm like why the fuck are you even visiting people if you plan to watch TV? They could stay home and do that, or show up for an hour two, then leave to go home and watch TV. There is no visiting and catching up if someone's attention is focused on a TV show. Also why does "football" get a pass on family holidays in terms of what is played on TV but not other shows?

I was sort of looking forward to catching up with aunts, uncles, and cousins, but not sure that's going to happen. It's hard enough talking when there are a lot of people around and there is just conversation happening, but add in TV noise and it's just unbearable. I'll probably eat and bail. Too much noise stresses me out. I already told mom when I get overwhelmed I'm leaving the party to go hide out away from the noise.

Which is what I did a lot of when I was growing up, parties with large groups of people make me miserable. Small gatherings are fine but I think after 10 people it's just too much.

I really shouldn't have gone out to get more cold meds but I had no choice, I needed them and there was no other way to get them. It's sometimes a real pain having to do everything myself. I took some and they're already starting to work, I just have to get as much rest as I can so I'm OK for Thanksgiving.

I learned yesterday, quite by accident, of yet another misstep by Timber Ridge marketing. They told me a fair number of things as truths that turned out not to be. Mostly small things, but some big ones, too. Ex. They told me the pool was salt water. It was not and never has been. They told me not to worry about choosing a carpet to mask pet stains as housekeeping would treat for all stains. They do not and this carpet, which was very expensive, has stains all over it. Lots of examples.

But, yesterday, I learned that they did NOT tell me there was a free, secured, internet available to me.

Turns out there are two wifi networks for residents. 1 is open and requires not password. It's the one I've been using for 2 years. But, because my printer and my web cams need a secured network, I've had to do work arounds which have been problematic. My latest one - a $40 a month Xfinity account which requires a modem and a router - has been failing regularly and I've been looking for alternatives. I was almost to the point of giving up my printer and web cams.

And then yesterday, I found out that there is another free wifi network that is secure. Each apartment has their own password. I was supposed to have been given the password by marketing when I moved in. Once I found out about the network, it took 2 mins to get my password. Those marketing fuckers.

So much of yesterday was spent moving everything to this new (to me) network which turned out to be non-trivial. The printer was the most problematic. But, I finally got it done. Then I had 18 other things to move to the network one by one. Interestingly, the hub that runs the shades was the easiest and it took the shades with it. The Echo products were very annoying. But, finally, I got everything moved. And unplugged the modem and the router.

I am in the middle of a call to cancel Xfinity (again) now. Their website does not have a phone number but fortunately Google does. Their website wants you to schedule a call back and the first available they offered was next wednesday at 5 am and then the page errored out. I called the Google number and now I have a person who, I hope, is going to do the job. There is now annoying music so Yeah but when she goes off to do her thing, there is the deadest air. She now says the job is done and she'll send me an email today. I'm not convinced. But, I'm willing to wait and see.

Oh. Ok, their website seems to reflect the change to done. And now I owe them -$32.00. Ok, so nice. They do have the slowest website on the planet.

It is actually lovely and luxurious to just have all the internet I need available without any hardware (and its eccentricities). Even better than electricity, really. I don't even need outlets. Just wifi everywhere. And my printer is WAY happier than it was. I can now print from any device and actually from anywhere in this complex!

I'm glad I got it all moved over yesterday.

Today, I think I'm going to skip swimming this morning. No good reason. I just feel like it. Bonny wants to go to Costco, so steps. I don't really need any Costco but heck that may change when I get there. Plus I can check on my ham and cheese croissants which I'm pretty sure they have discontinued but maybe...

I do need to trot downstairs to pick up the menus for next week. Oh, I may actually get to be on the Food and Beverage Committee next year. I was asked this week if I was still interested and I said YES, Please.

Biggie and Julio are snuggled up together on the couch. Biggie appears to be asleep but Julio is clearly awake and just enjoying the cuddle and happy that Biggie hasn't kicked him off. So cute.

With the library remodel going on, I’m not getting to watch much anime. I started out with good intentions, but I don’t have the time. I’m watching way fewer episodes than usual. I’ve had to prioritize. Here’s a quick summary of the shows I sampled – and which ones are getting attention.

Skip Beat! Vol. 51
Skip Beat! Vol. 51

Last week Kinokuniya has another 20% everything sale for members. I was ignoring the sale until Saturday night when I checked my Anime / Manga Tracker and saw that Skip Beat! Vol. 51 had been released earlier this month. Actually, there were several gaps in my collected series that I could plug with the 20% discount.

Anime / Manga Tracker, Nov 2025
Anime / Manga Tracker, Nov 2025

Sunday was the last day of the sale, so Sunday after church I drove into Portland. I located street parking a block from Kinokuniya Portland. In downtown Portland, metered parking doesn’t start until 1 pm on Sunday, and it was just before noon.

In Kinokuniya Portland, I struck out – 0 for 3 on series. Not only did they not have the new release – they hardly carried the series at all – maybe one random volume. It was extremely disappointing.

I drove back to Beaverton and decided I might as well swing by the much smaller Kinokuniya in Beaverton. I was pleased to find a single copy of Skip Beat! vol. 51 alongside two other Skip Beat! volumes – and none of the other series.

My Kinokuniya membership expired at the end of August. I didn’t renew right away. Once a Kinokuniya cashier gave me the tip to wait until I actually needed a new membership. That could save me a few months – and it does. I didn’t have to pay for September or October. The new clock starts in November and will expire on November 30 next year.

The thing is, I’m trying to keep my book purchases under control, and I’ll cut back on art book purchases. And since Kinokuniya seems to stock maybe half of the series I’m collecting, maybe I don’t need to buy a membership anymore. You have to spend $250/year to break even – easy to do if you’re buying art books – but not so easy on just manga volumes. And I have to buy half the manga volumes online anyway. Perhaps this is the last membership I buy; could be the end of an era.

How's It Going YEMers?

Can you believe it? We are twenty days into our Year-End Marathon! That means we're roughly a third of the way through the challenge, for a par of 10 000 words or 10 days towards your YEM pledge. But whether you're on par or not, we'd love to hear how things are going for you. Your triumphs and your frustrations. Are the words flowing like water or does it feel more like time is slipping through your fingers? What can we do to help you reach your goal?

For myself, I've been struggling to get words into the project I was wanting to focus on this month. The desire is there, but bum glue has been in short supply. And then a whole new (and much shorter) project blossomed into my GYWO Scrivener project and oh look at that, words! 😅

If you're soaring ahead, great job! If you feel like you're falling behind, just remember this is a Marathon and we've still got a good ways to go. You could have zero days of writing and still make a daily writing pledge, so hang in there!

This is not a check-in post and participation is entirely voluntary. The official YEM check-in will happen on Discord at the end of the month, and while that is also entirely optional, we strongly recommend it as a way of supporting your writing habit.
