Thor & Loki: Double Trouble #1
Mar. 10th, 2021 07:04 pmSpoilers? IDK. Cut just in case.
I remain... unconvinced. I think that's the word for it.
It's not thrilled me. I'm not sure if it's the incongruity in the art that I find distracting, or something else. But it feels off.
It feels like fanfic.
Now, I say this as a prolific writer of fanfic, so this isn't meant as some massive dunk. But fanfic is inherently off. Every fic writer has their own versions of the characters, and their own ideas of how Asgard works, etc. And so far, this comic feels like fanfic.
Aside from the fact that Loki is hilariously tiny and looks like Edward Elric, he feels wrong. It feels like it's some sort of pre-canon romp; a flashback to when they were kids, but it's not that because they've gone with the Ikol character model where he's dressed like an Asgardian pimp.
It's cute. It's a fun romp. But it lacks substance. There's no emotion or soul behind it. And maybe that's just highlighted more by whatever the hell is going on in the main Thor title, where last we saw Donald Blake, he fucking ate Frog Thor like a goddamn lunatic.
I think the baseline insanity that is the main continuity is always going to be difficult to live up to, especially when you're going for a family friendly title. And that's probably why it feels like fanfic.
