My brother's coming up later today, and bringing his three year old. Her birthday was a couple weeks ago, but I missed it for a variety of reasons. The first being I was busy getting a biopsy done, so I wouldn't have been able to go anyway. But also they had the party at our mother's, whom I haven't spoken a word to since 2019. My brother is aware of this fact, and when he mentioned the party to me, he did it in such a way as to make me aware that it was happening, and immediately asked if I wanted to do something else separate away from all that nonsense. So we're having our own little special party with cookies and a salmon dinner.
When we made dinner plans, it came about that he doesn't actually know how to make salmon, so even though it's one of his favourites, he doesn't get to have it very often unless he goes to our dad's. Then it came about that he doesn't know how to cook at all, which is simply unacceptable when the man's got a three year old to take care of. So I've pulled some old cook books I never use from my shelves and stuck them a bag, along with the gifts we got for the kid, and I got a spare Paperblanks notebook down and started copying my personal recipe book down for him as well. So I'm gonna show him how to make the salmon and all that, as well as the cookies, so he can leave with a few more skills. I need to finish copying over my recipe book before he gets here, which I'll probably do while I watch Joe Lycett's special from last night, which I never got the chance to watch cuz I wound up staying up until midnight working on fic for the first time since March.
I haven't posted the chapter yet, but I'll do that tonight after they leave. It's for one of my insanely self-indulgent fics that I never really expected anyone to be into in the first place, and is mainly just a hell of a lot of backstory for God of Outcasts. I got the idea for it from Fire & Blood, which I got through in about three days in audiobook form. I loved the idea of an in-universe textbook, and could have very easily listened the history of the entire Targaryen dynasty. I was actually disappointed that Fire & Blood wasn't the entire dynasty's history, although apparently there is a second volume coming out at some point in the next century. But I'd been trying to work out for ages how to fit all this other random information into that fic, when it just didn't fit anywhere, even though it was tangentially important in its own way, and then I'd listened to that book and it was like, Oh. That's how. Just write it all anyway, and then it's at least down somewhere, and if someone reading God of Outcasts really wants to know what this particular thing being referenced is really all about, they can go read this ridiculous thing over here. It's funny, because I've never once had the desire to write ASOIAF fic, but in a weird way, this particular fic is kind of that because it wouldn't have happened had I not decided to download that audiobook.
